Choosing a Suitable Motorbike Trailer

A motorbike trailer is a vehicle that is used to carry motorbikes. The term also refers to a motorbike that is used to pull a trailer that transports cargo. Motorcycle trailers are different from other types of trailer in that they have tracks to keep the wheels of the motorcycle form wobbling from side to side. This prevents the motorcycle form tipping off the trailer. They also include ramps to load and unload the motorcycles.

Motorbike trailers are used mainly for transportation. They have an advantage of speed but lack in storage space. Motorbike trailers can be open or closed and can carry one or more motorcycles. The enclosed trailers prevent damage from poor weather conditions such as rain. They are also safer and prevent view from curious onlookers. Their main limitation is that they are heavier than the open trailers. Another type of motorcycle trailer is one that is made to be collapsible for easier storage when the trailer is not in use. They can also come with an adjustable tongue length. This means that the length of the trailer can be adjusted to accommodate more cargo.

Motorcycle trailers are made with different types of metals. One such metal is aluminum. Aluminum is suitable when manufacturing motorbike trailers because it is durable and easy to work with i.e. it is malleable. Malleability is the ability of a metal to be shaped into different forms. Aluminum is also light in weight. Although it is also resistant to corrosion, it is not as strong as mild steel or stainless steel. It also has the disadvantage of being relatively expensive. To make the trailer stronger, it is necessary to make its body thicker if one is to use aluminum. Aluminum is also prone to electrolysis which is a form of corrosion that occurs in adverse environmental conditions. Care must be taken to avoid this by applying a powder coating that prevents corrosion. Hot dipped galvanizing is another reliable but expensive way or preventing rusting. It leaves the trailer with an industrial unfinished and uneven look because of the sharp dried zinc deposits. Painting is therefore a must which adds to the overall cost of the trailer. Hot dipped galvanizing therefore proves to be a not so affordable method of rust prevention.

Mild steel is one of the strongest and most durable materials. It is also easy to work with and very affordable. The only major disadvantage is that it corrodes. However this limitation can be overcome by making an alloy of steel and another stainless metal. One can also paint the steel to avoid corrosion.

Stainless steel has the most disadvantages. Not only is it expensive, but it is also harder to work with and not as durable. Its advantages are that it looks good and is very strong.

When choosing a motorbike trailer, one may encounter different types of trailers on the market. Some motorcycle trailers are smaller in size and have a narrow base. They are pulled behind the motorcycle and can be of either the single-wheeled or doubled-wheeled type. They can be styled to match the color and shape of the motorcycle. Due to their small size, they can only carry a small amount of cargo. The single-wheeled type allows an amount of flexibility similar to the normal motorcycle. The double-wheeled type is more flexible.

With all these options, one needs to have some factors to consider when choosing a motor bike trailer.

First of all, safety should be ensured. Make sure to match the type of trailer with the weight of the cargo. The width of the trailer should also not be greater than the handlebar.

When choosing a trailer to transport your motorcycle, you need to put in mind the type of car you are using for towing and the hitch that can be attached to it. This will determine the weight of the bike that can be carries. Also determine if your bike needs to be protected from flying debris, rain, or prying eyes. If so, an enclosed trailer is the best option. Enclosed trailers are betting than putting a tarp over an open trailer as the tarp can come loose. On the other hand, if you are considering speed, an enclosed trailer may not be the best option as it is heavier hence slower.

If the trailer is to be used not only to transport the motorbike but also other cargo, it is advisable to go with a general flatbed. If storage size is important, choose a trailer with a fold-up or a stand-up.

If one is to transport the bike over a long distance, the weight and shape of the trailer should be kept in mind. The lighter the trailer, the less the fuel consumption.

Finally, the overall cost should be determined. One can reduce the cost by transporting several motorbikes on one trailer. However, one should ensure that that particular trailer is designed to hold that number of bikes.
